People, Ideas, and Hope: Understanding the Foundation of Ode Ventures

Whether you’re perusing our website, visiting our home office, or reading one of our business cards, you might have noticed a saying somewhere that says: “Investing in People, Ideas, & Hope.”

Coined by our founder, Fred Ode, you’ll find this phrase so often within our firm because it exists at the heart of what we do, and why we do it. Serving as our core tenets, "People, Ideas, & Hope" guide major decisions, from high-level executions to daily operations and assessing potential ventures. It’s a phrase that means a lot more than a tagline, and it’s on all things Ode for one reason: to remind us of our most important values when making the most important decisions.

We are an investment firm driven by growth and impact. In this article, we’re here to explain just what that looks like alongside our values and why “People, Ideas & Hope” guides our actions and vision, every day.

Investing in People

The meaning of “Investing in People” is twofold at Ode Ventures, especially within the context of our particular focus.

For one, usually, founders understand their company on an intimate level that is hard for outsiders to fully grasp. Founders have been there from the ground up and filled in the gaps of virtually every field, from overseeing operations, networking, creating relationships with clients, delivering quality work, and making minute and colossal decisions every day. They are problem-solvers, leaders, and operators all at once, carrying the weight of the business long before anyone else steps in. All these things to say: this is why Ode Ventures, outside of providing integral resources, considers itself to be “founder-first.”

Being founder-first means respecting the vision of entrepreneurs and supporting decision-making as a partner. Though larger, Silicon Valley-type VC’s have their own benefits, these environments often prioritize output over the individual. Our founder-first firm, in contrast, makes sure entrepreneurs have opportunities for growth and agency within their own company, rather than feeling removed as operations scale.

This is the culture we strive to uphold. Though expertise is crucial, people must be prioritized, which is the biggest reason why you’ll find it first in our core pillars.

On the other hand, “Investing in People” also refers to the character and leadership qualities our founders possess. Especially within service-oriented industries, this matters immensely.

With service-industry related businesses in particular, you aren’t just selling your company, but yourself. Character resonates within a business, with culture often being a direct reflection of the founder's personal qualities.

At Ode Ventures, we are drawn to all kinds of different industries. The common dominator, then, is not in a particular service field, but specific traits we seek out within founders. This isn’t to say we’re biased towards certain personalities. Our team works with all different kinds of people from unique upbringings, backgrounds, and industries. Through it all, we are consistently drawn towards individuals who possess tenacity, independence, and dedication towards their craft. These are the traits we believe great leaders possess, and we consistently strive to work alongside them within a partnership.

At the end of the day, founders are the ones on the ground floor. This is why investing in the right people—those who show initiative, instinct, and drive—is so essential.

Investing in Ideas

We keep our focus on viable concepts that serve local communities in practical ways. Ideas, then, don’t exist in the next trending novelty, but in asking ourselves: Is this a quality concept that’s being delivered with excellence?

Our portfolio reflects this with several examples. New Pathways serves those struggling with treatment-resistant mental health issues through ketamine therapy. Martin Blueberries’ team uses permaculture-inspired farming techniques that step away from the status quo for the benefit of the local ecosystem. Knutson Safety Kontrols, a traffic control provider, constantly seeks to improve by applying advanced tools for efficiency, like body cameras and AI integration. These are diverse industries, though their similarities lie in their innovative approach. Each one strives to fill in known gaps with improved, unique solutions.

We are constantly asking entrepreneurs within our evaluations: Does this solve a real, clearly defined problem, and is it being executed at a high standard? Where are you intentionally doing things differently from the standard approach in your industry?

Often, these answers make all the difference. They reveal whether an idea has not just the depth to grow but the resilience to adapt in our ever-changing world.

Investing in Hope

Hope, for us, is a belief in a company, founder, and vision that’s strong enough to justify taking a risk on its future.

This goes beyond our own perspective. It also includes the founder’s belief in themselves through uncertainty and the understanding that what they’re building has the potential to meet a real need.

Almost all VC’s exhibit hope in some capacity. Risk and investments are almost never separate.

But at the end of the day, we believe good, hard-working people deserve the backing they need to succeed. Our hope is that, through partnership, founders’ and communities' lives will be meaningfully changed. Hope reminds us that what we do extends beyond business metrics and has a lasting impact.

Ode Ventures' Commitment to Entrepreneurs

We’re proud to work so closely within our values and to say all of our ventures live up to these standards of leadership and excellent service. At the end of the day, these pillars drive our mission at Ode Ventures as we continue to provide resources for small business owners and entrepreneurs.

What drives us forward is a belief that success is not just measured in returns, but in the strength of the relationships we build and the value we contribute to. Each venture we support is an opportunity to uphold that belief and put it into practice.
